Have you ever felt like the education system wasn’t built for you? Or watched your child struggle with reading, wondering if they’re being left behind? You’re not alone, and that’s why I created Dyslexia Bedford. My name is Louise Cunningham, and I am beyond excited to share this new journey with you. This is my very first blog post, marking the launch of Dyslexia Bedford – a space dedicated to empowering individuals with dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties (SpLDs).
A Journey Rooted in Experience
With over 25 years of experience in education, I’ve been privileged to work with hundreds of children and families as a qualified specialist teacher, SENDCO, and Assistant Headteacher. During this time, I’ve supported children and young people across various settings, from primary to secondary schools and mainstream to specialist environments. These experiences have taught me a vital lesson: every learner is unique, and every individual deserves tailored support that meets their needs.
My connection to dyslexia goes beyond my professional expertise — it’s deeply personal. I am dyslexic, and I’m also a parent of a dyslexic child. As a student, I struggled with reading aloud in class and keeping up with my peers. I vividly remember a teacher criticising my spelling and telling me, “You will never make it as a teacher!” Years later, I see my daughter facing the exact same challenges in the classroom. Those experiences were difficult, but they fuelled my determination and shaped who I am today. They taught me resilience, creativity, and the ability to think outside the box — strengths I now celebrate and strive to help others discover in themselves.
Why I Started Dyslexia Bedford
For years, I’ve seen too many children, parents, and educators overwhelmed by unanswered questions about dyslexia. Families often feel lost, unsure of where to turn to for help or how to navigate the complexities of the education system and the red tape surrounding special educational needs (SEN). This inspired me to create Dyslexia Bedford: a place where children, parents, and adults can find answers, guidance, and the support they deserve.
